WPR - double Champions of Oulton!

Josh Fisher (Post '89) and Calum McHale (Pre '90) were confirmed as Champions of Oulton in their respective classes at Oulton on October 17th.

In the two Post '89 events a third and a fourth were sufficient to secure Josh the Championship by a comfortable margin driving the Richard Hudson-Evans Van Diemen RF99. Having qualified third Josh ran as high as second before settling for third in the first race. In the second race he stayed out of trouble in fourth place for the entire race but still took fastest lap.

In the first Pre '90 race, Calum, having qualified second, took the lead for the opening laps and then repeatedly traded it with Matthew Cowley, his nearest challenger for the Championship and eventually finished second a half a second down. By taking fastest lap and maximum points Cowley had narrowed Calum's Championship lead making Race 2 the final and deciding round of the Championship. Another good start saw Calum take the lead and hold it for the first 7 laps. Cowley led over the line on Lap 8 but Calum was back in front on Lap 9 but then an incident on the final Lap potentially ruined his Championship hopes. However, he recovered to come home in third place and, crucially, take the fastest lap. This put Calum and Cowley equal in the Championship on 195 points leaving the outcome to a tie breaker. Amazingly they had the same number of first, seconds and thirds but, by dint of having more fourths, the title went to the WPR driver. Phew!

In Race 1 Wayne Poole had one of his occasional outings in his Van Diemen RF88, finishing 9th after a good start saw him up to third on the opening lap but dropping to the back of the field on Lap 5, while Steve Bracegirdle was a couple of places back in his RF89. In Race 2 Wayne worked his way up to fourth before retiring on the last lap and Steve again finished in 11th.
